A man wandered beyond the barrirer at the Rockefeller Lookout in Englewood Cliffs and fell to his death just before 9 o'clock Saturday night, witnesses told police.
Palisades Interstate Parkway Police had reopened the PIP to traffic barely an hour earlier, following the day's Ironman event, when they got the emergency call.
"Officers arrived within minutes and interviewed witnesses who reported that a male victim had fallen from the cliffs," Lt. Michael Coppola said. "He was reported to have been on the cliff edge beyond a placarded safety barrier near the middle of the lookout."
A search and rescue operation was immediately conducted utilizing the Englewood Cliffs Fire Department, East Bergen Rappel Team and NYPD Aviation, Coppola said.
Rescue crews found the victim directly below where he was reported to have fallen, the lieutenant said, adding that the man was pronounced dead soon after.
"Although the case is still being investigated," he added, "it is not believed that anything suspicious is involved." In June, a Jersey Shore man fell to his death from the same spot above the Hudson River, after placing both a walker and a walking cane against the railing.
