PORTLAND -- An 84-year-old woman who had been missing since Saturday night was found "safe and dry" by a police officer, family members said.
Family members had reported Mary Howell missing from her North Portland home just after 2 a.m. Sunday, saying he had last been seen around 9 p.m. Saturday.
Police considered her endangered because she suffers from dementia and was not dressed properly for the cold, wet weather, according to Sgt. Pete Simpson with Portland police.
An officer found her Sunday afternoon while responding to a welfare check on SE Water Street, Simpson said. Someone inside Alder Creek Kayak and Canoe had called police to say Howell was inside the store and didn't know how to get home.
The officer drove her home, where family members told KGW Howell was safe and dry, and did not need medical attention.
Multnomah County Search and Rescue teams, including K-9 officers had been involved in the search.
Detectives had also activated an emergency reverse-phone notification system to alert residents in the area, and volunteers began searching her neighborhood Sunday afternoon.
